UPSC PRE 2023 EXAM Syllabus, Format, Exam Date and other Details
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2023. The exam will be conducted on May 28, 2023 and aspirants are advised to go through UPSC Syllabus in detail to strategize their preparation. The UPSC exam is considered one of the toughest exams in India and requires a lot of hard work and dedication to crack it. It is conducted in three stages - Prelims, Mains and Interview. There are three phases to this exam - Preliminaries, Main Exam, and Interview. There are objective-type questions in the Prelims exam. Candidates who pass this exam are qualified to take the Mains exam. Essay writing, a language exam, General Studies (GS), and the applicant's elective subject that they choose before registration make up this exam. It is advisable that you choose the optional subject in which you excel. For the interview, only qualified students are invited. It includes a test for the individual. During this phase, candidates are questioned in a variety of ways.

NOTE 1. Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
NOTE 2. The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.
NOTE 3. It is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination for the purpose of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be disqualified in case he/she does not appear in both the papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination.
UPSC PRE 2023 EXAM PATTERN
The preliminary examination for Indian Administrative Services Examination is divided into two Papers. The first paper contains 100 questions of total 200 marks from General Studies. The second paper contains 80 questions of total of 200 marks from Civil Service Aptitude Test.

Note: The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
UPSC PRE MODE OF EXAM
The Preliminary examination for Indian Administrative Service will be held as an Offline Pen & Paper Based Examination. It will contain objective-type questions.
UPSC PRE MEDIUM OF EXAM
The question paper will be set both in Hindi & English.
UPSC PRE MARKING SCHEME
There will be negative marking for incorrect answers, as detailed below:
1. There are four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
2. If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happen to be correct and there will be the same penalty as above for that question.
3. If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.
UPSC PRE EXAM IMPORTANT FACTS
1. The Preliminary Examination will be held in two papers of total 400 marks.
2. For each paper, 120 minutes will be allotted.
3. Only those candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary/ Stage-I Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Main/ Stage-II Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Main/ Stage-II Examination.
4. The question paper will be set both in Hindi & English.
5. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
