In a recent development, the Indian government announced that six of the seven Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) battalions will be stationed in Arunachal Pradesh, India's north eastern border state, to counter China's maneuvers. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved a proposal to hire 9,400 personnel for the ITBP in February. The move follows the 2020 standoff between Indian and Chinese forces, which resulted in increased military presence along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Arunachal Pradesh Is Getting ITBP Battalions
The decision to station six of the seven ITBP battalions in Arunachal Pradesh represents a significant effort by the Indian government to counter Chinese presence in the region. The move is expected to strengthen India's military presence along the LAC and prevent China from engaging in frequent transgressions. The new battalion and sector headquarters are scheduled to open in 2025-26.
China And Other Countries' Borders
The middle sector of India's border with China is located between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on the Indian side and the Tibet autonomous region on the Chinese side. Arunachal Pradesh shares borders with Myanmar and Bhutan in addition to China. Arunachal Pradesh's international border stretches for 1,863 kilometers.
Tensions With China Have Recently Risen
In December 2020, Indian and Chinese troops clashed near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, where troops from both sides exchanged blows after hundreds of Chinese soldiers crossed the border into India's territory. According to India, China has an illegal occupation of 38,000 square kilometers in Ladakh and 90,000 square kilometers in Arunachal Pradesh. The unmarked LAC has been a source of contention between the two countries.
Vibrant Village Programs
Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Arunachal Pradesh to launch the Vibrant Village Programme. This scheme has identified 2,967 villages in 46 blocks of 19 districts in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh for comprehensive development. In the first phase, 662 villages have been identified for priority coverage, including 455 in Arunachal Pradesh.
