Description

Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary has been designated as the state's 18th wildlife sanctuary by the Tamil Nadu government. The sanctuary will cover an area of 80,567 hectares in the forests of Anthiyur and Gobichettipalayam taluks in Erode district and will include reserve forest areas in Anthiyur, Bargur, Thattakarai, and Chennampatti. The announcement was made recently during the state budget.

Wildlife And Species Found In Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

In Karnataka, Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is close to Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, BRT Wildlife Sanctuary, and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. It connects the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve to the Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to 21 mammals, 136 birds, and 118 butterflies. It is home to elephants, leopards, wild boars, gaurs, and deer, among other animals.

No Restrictions Imposed On Tribal people

The announcement of the new wildlife sanctuary will not interfere with the work of the region's tribal communities. The tribals who live in these protected areas are not expected to lose their rights under the Forest Rights Act because tribals in six settlements have already received titles.

Increased Support For Asian Elephant Conservation

The Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary's designation will be a significant boon to Asian elephant conservation. The state government hopes that by adding this new feature, it will be able to expand on its ongoing conservation efforts and provide a better ecosystem for wildlife. The notification will also ensure the protection of flora and fauna, as well as aid in the reduction of human-wildlife conflict in the Bargur hills. The funds will be used to hire more anti-poaching officers, strengthen wildlife protection measures, and eradicate invasive species from the area.
