The Gaganyaan mission's first test vehicle demonstration (TV-D1) will take place in May 2023. Its goal is to test the mid-air abort process, the parachute system, and crew member recovery after splashdown. The crew module will be carried to a sub-orbital level using a single liquid propellant-based rocket stage. This demonstration's success will bring the Gaganyaan mission one step closer to its goal of sending humans to space.
Additional Demonstrations And Crewed Missions
The uncrewed mission will take place only after two such demonstrations are successful. Before the second uncrewed mission, which will carry a pressurised crew module, two more test vehicle demonstrations will take place. The first crewed mission is expected to launch in late 2024 or early 2025, depending on the success of these tests.
Recommendation Of The Gaganyaan Advisory Council
Before proceeding with crewed missions, the Gaganyaan Advisory Council has recommended additional testing for the Crew Escape System and deceleration systems via four abort missions using Test Vehicle (TV) and Integrated Air Drop Tests. This was in addition to the two unmanned missions that had been planned.
Testing Peocedures
The TV-D1 is intended to test the procedures for aborting the mission mid-flight, the parachute system that will lower the crew module to the sea, and the recovery of crew members from the module after splashdown. The crew module will be carried to sub-orbital level by a single liquid propellant-based rocket stage during the demonstration.
The significance Of TV-D1
The test vehicle demonstration is an important step in the advancement of the Gaganyaan mission. The TV-D1 mission aims to test the spacecraft and its systems, including the escape mechanism, at a much higher altitude than previously. The success of the TV-D1 will pave the way for additional testing and, eventually, a crewed mission.
