Description

Yaoshang, one of Manipur's most important festivals, is held over five days during the full moon day of the Lamda month (February-March). The festival is part of the Meitei people's indigenous traditions. It starts shortly after sunset in each village with the Yaoshang Mei thaba (burning of the straw hut).

Holi is known as the Yaoshang festival in Manipur. The festival lasts for five days. It is observed to mark the start of spring. On this day, worshippers sing hymns and kirtans.

Yaoshang Mei Thaba

It is a ritual that takes place during the festival. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a saint from the 15th century. He is thought to be Lord Krishna's and Goddess Radha's avatar. During the Yaoshang festival, an idol of Lord Chaitanya is worshipped for six to seven days in a hut-like structure made of hay. The idol is removed the night before the festival and the hut is burned to ashes. "YAOSHANG MEI THABA" is the name of the burning ceremony. The ashes are thought to be extremely auspicious. These ashes are sprayed over the head and in front of the local houses.

Music And Dance Of Yaoshang festival

The Yaoshang festival celebrations have recently begun. They include activities such as the Thabal Chongba, a traditional Manipuri dance, Mukna Kangjei (a combination of hockey and wrestling), and Pana Sankirtana, a type of traditional music.
