The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom will collaborate to develop joint masters programmes. According to an official announcement, students would study in both Birmingham and Chennai before getting a single degree from both universities. It has been proposed that the first joint postgraduate programme be launched next year, followed by the development of additional study programmes in coming years.
Professor Adam Tickell visited Chennai and reached the partnership agreement. According to an IIT Madras release, this is the first such education relationship at the masters level between any IIT and a UK Russell Group University. Academic flexibility would allow students to learn and work in current fields that would influence the future of global engineering and technology. The agreement builds on a previous agreement reached in February 2022, in which both institutions expressed their goal to expand their collaboration.
Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, and Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham, signed a statement of intent to collaborate on research in fields such as data science, energy systems, and biomedical engineering.
The two universities have also agreed to create a collaborative research fund to help academics and researchers investigate prospective research collaborations in data science, energy systems, and biomedical engineering.
Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham, emphasised the significance of this relationship and said “These innovative joint postgraduate programmes between IIT Madras and University Birmingham will offer students the opportunity to pursue a world-class education at globally leading institutions in two countries, and to have their educational achievements recognised by both.”
According to an IIT Madras release, the joint programmes would be taught on both campuses, and mutual acceptance of academic credits given by each university will result in the granting of a single degree certificate.
The University of Birmingham has a number of key collaborations with India, which are supported by its India Institute, which strives to expand the visibility, impact, and coherence of Birmingham's engagement in the nation, according to the university.
