Description

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi) is set to establish an Offshore campus in Abu Dhabi. According to IIT Delhi, the founding IITs—IIT Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, and others—will run the international IITs for at least ten years. The IIT Delhi will hire faculty for the Abu Dhabi offshore campus and develop curriculum for the institutes. According to IIT Delhi, a new curriculum will be introduced in 2023.

Previously, a 17-member panel recommended that the best governance system from anywhere in the world be adopted for these institutes, including the governance structure of IITs. It further said, "The governance structure should be such that while the connection with the mentoring IITs is maintained, any approval from the mentoring IIT or Indian government should not be required."

The panel recommended that IIT's offshore institutes be given more autonomy than they currently have. "The Act of Parliament through which these institutes are created should give them more freedom than the current IITs. These institutes have to adapt themselves as per local laws and other legal and financial requirements and, therefore, should have enough freedom to excel," it said.

It further added, "The local agencies should be identified and on-boarded by the Indian Embassy in the foreign country. Hiring these agencies should not be the responsibility of the mentoring IITs as they may not have the required know-how and experience in dealing with such agencies. The mentoring IIT should, however, provide their requirements, specifications and interface closely with the selected agency to ensure timely progress."

Apart from IIT Delhi, several IITs are receiving requests to establish campuses in the Middle East and, South Asia. IIT Madras is looking to open a campus in Tanzania, while IIT Kharagpur is looking to open one in Malaysia.
