She is the third woman to be elected President of an East African Community country. Agathe Uwilingiyimana of Rwanda and Sylvie Kinigi of Burundi are the other two female rulers of state. After President John Magufuli's death on March 17, 2021, she seized office on March 19, 2021.
Career in Politics
In the year 2000, she chose to compete for public service and was elected to the Zanzibar House of Representatives, where she was appointed as a minister by President Amani Karume. She was the only high-ranking female minister at the time, and her male colleagues regarded her with disdain. She was re-elected in 2005 and re-appointed as a minister in another cabinet post. In 2010, she ran for the National Assembly and won with more than 80% of the vote. President Jakaya Kikwete then nominated her as Minister of State for Union Affairs. She was chosen Vice-Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly in 2014, and was tasked with crafting Tanzania's new constitution.
The country's president
She was sworn in as Magufuli's successor on March 19, 2021, after he died. She will be the second five-year term for Magufuli. She became one of only two serving female heads of state in Africa after taking office, with Ethiopia's Sahle-Work Zewde. Her administration has stepped up efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, as well as lifting the ban on pregnant girls attending public schools.
