Overview
Bio-diesel may be utilised for running diesel locomotives on a trial basis before being declared necessary by the railways. The use of biodiesel will help the railways save money on their diesel expense. Bio-diesel will also help to reduce pollution by lowering emissions. The cost of high-speed diesel in 2018-29, including freight taxes, was Rs 18,587.14 crore, while it was Rs 16,030.58 crore in 2019-20.
The Indian railroads' diesel expenditure is likely to decrease as the railways strive to achieve 100 percent electrification by the end of 2023, however diesel locomotives will continue to be used for freight operations for a long time due to their high carrying capacity.
