The Punjab government required private schools to post a list of shops selling books and uniforms on Tuesday, giving parents the option of purchasing these products from any of the shops listed. According to an official announcement, schools will be required to publish a list of at least three stores in villages and 20 in cities, and the list will be shared with District Education Officers (DEOs).
Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Punjab Education Minister, has asked DEOs to organise inspection teams to verify the list of stores by performing random inspections, and any infractions identified will be dealt with harshly. Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister, has previously instructed private schools not to force parents to purchase books and uniforms from a certain store. Hayer also directed the district regulatory bodies, which are led by deputy commissioners, to take proactive steps in responding to concerns about private schools.
He stated it had been brought to his attention that, despite the chief minister's severe directives, a few private schools were flagrantly disobeying them. Defaulting schools will be subjected to serious action in the near future for disobeying these regulations, and will be required to follow them to the letter and spirit, according to the minister.
