Highlights

The Abel Prize for 2022 has been given to American mathematician Dennis Parnell Sullivan by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The prize was presented "for his revolutionary contributions to topology in its widest sense, notably its algebraic, geometric, and dynamical aspects," according to the citation. Topology is a branch of mathematics that was founded in the nineteenth century and deals with the characteristics of surfaces that do not change when distorted.

Abel Award

The Abel Prize honours exceptional contributions to the field of mathematics and is financed by the Norwegian government. The Abel Laureates are chosen based on the recommendations of the Abel Committee, which consists of five globally prominent mathematicians.

Dennis P. Sullivan

Dennis P. Sullivan has received various honours, including the Steele Prize, the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 2010, and the Balzan Prize in Mathematics in 2014. He also belongs to the American Mathematical Society.
