Description

According to a biodiversity assessment issued today by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee boasts 304 distinct plant species. The IIT Roorkee-sponsored project was the first of its kind to chronicle the campus's flora and wildlife"The discovery of Typhoniuminopinatum, an herbaceous plant in the Araceae family(Arum), is significant for the IIT Roorkee campus". The floristic study, which lasted five months, found a rich assemblage of plants belonging to trees, shrubs, herbs, and woody and herbaceous climbers. Within the campus, 304 species from 237 genera and 87 distinct plant groups were identified. The bulk of them are flowering plants or angiosperms (291 species), with 9 species belonging to gymnosperms or cone-bearing plants.

Four pteridophytes, including ferns and their relatives, were also identified

Trees were the most common floral type, accounting for 140 species, followed by herbs (91 species), shrubs (45 species), and climbing plants (28 species). "Human impact is speeding climate change, causing major environmental issues globally," stated Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee. As a result, it was time to return to nature in order to embrace more sustainable methods of life while keeping our planet's future in mind."

"It all starts with one's immediate surroundings, and thankfully for us, our IIT Roorkee campus is endowed with huge green spaces, earning us the title of "Urban Greenspace." And, as part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard the environment, a joint research with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, was launched, with the outcome being an inventory of the campus's floral and faunal riches. "I am certain that many of our teachers, students, and staff, as well as that on campus and abroad, will be more inspired by Nature as a result of this paper," Prof Chaturvedi remarked.
