Description

The Islamic State has appointed Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi as its new leader, confirming the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi, who was assassinated by the US in northern Syria in early February 2022. The IS spokesperson, Abu Omar al-Muhajer, acknowledged the death of the group's head, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, and its former spokesman, Abu Hamza al-Qurayshi, in the US raid in an audio recording on March 10th. The IS spokesperson announced that a replacement had been picked, naming him Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, and stating that he had accepted the leadership. According to Muhajer, the late IS head picked his successor.

What is the identity of Abu al-Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi?

There is little information available on the new IS commander, Abu al-Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi. His true name is likewise unknown. The name al-Qurashi is derived from Quraish, the tribe to whom Islam's Prophet Muhammad belonged. As part of an IS leader's nom de guerre, the name is adopted by the Islamic state's leaders. Despite having similar names, the leaders are not thought to be related. There is no evidence that the current IS commander is Iraqi, as were his two predecessors, who were both murdered in rebel-held areas of Syria.

Abu Ibrahim al-death Qurashi's

On February 3, 2022, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was allegedly killed in a nocturnal raid by US Special Forces in the rebel-held northwestern Syrian town of AtmeAccording to US authorities, the IS commander blew himself up together with his family during a raid on his bunker by US soldiers. About 50 US special troops landed in the area in helicopters and stormed the home with firearms for more than two hours. In a televised address the next day, US President Joe Biden confirmed the assassination of the IS commander, adding that Qurayshi's death "removed a serious terrorist danger to the globe." He emphasised that the terrorist commander was accused of genocide against the Yazidis in northern Iraq. Abu Ibrahim was born in the northern Iraqi town of Tel Afar, according to reports. He was a survivor of Saddam Hussein's post-Saddam Hussein Sunni-led insurgency. He was the fourth top Isis leader to be followed, apprehended, or slain in Syria's Idlib province in the previous two years. It is also the second time in three years that the US has assassinated a leader of the extremist organisation that has been fighting for a rebirth in the region with deadly strikes.
