A Quantum Key Distribution connection will be built between Prayagraj and Vindhyachal in Uttar Pradesh, spanning approximately 100 kilometres. Quantum key distribution is a secure communication method that employs a cryptographic protocol comprised on quantum mechanics components. It allows two parties to generate a shared random secret key that is only known to them. Messages may be encrypted and decrypted using the secret key.

How was this achievement accomplished?

The technological achievement was accomplished using commercial quality optical fibre that is already in use in the field. With this, India showed indigenous secure key transfer technology capable of bootstrapping a military grade communication security key hierarchy. The performance characteristics were tested and verified to be within the quoted international norms of up to 10 KHz.

This technology will allow security agencies to plan an appropriate quantum communication network with an indigenous technological backbone.

Quantum key distribution is solely used to generate and distribute keys, not to send message contents. This key can be used to encrypt and decode a message using any encryption technique. This message can then be sent using a regular communication channel.
