Concerning the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians

The Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians is an annual mathematics award given by the "International Centre for Theoretical Physics" in Italy. Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician, inspired the name. The prize was established in 2004 and was first given in 2005.

Who is the winner of the prize?

The Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians is given to a researcher from a developing nation who is under the age of 45 and has performed exceptional research in that country. It is funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of India, as well as the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, through the Abel Fund, in collaboration with the "International Mathematical Union."

The scheme's funding

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is funding the award in partnership with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics and the International Mathematical Union.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was he?

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a mathematician from India. He resided in India during the British rule, He had very no formal experience in pure mathematics, but he produced significant contributions to mathematical analysis, infinite series, number theory, continuing fractions, and solutions to previously intractable mathematical problems. He began by conducting his own mathematical studies in seclusion.

International Mathematical Union (IMU)

The International Mathematical Union (IMU) is a non-governmental organisation committed to international collaboration in mathematics across the world. It belongs to the International Science Council (ISC). It backs the International Mathematical Congress. Its members are national mathematics organisations from around 80 nations. The IMU was founded in 1920, but it was abolished in September 1932. It was re-established during the New York Constitutive Convention in 1950.
