On February 18, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 100 kisan drones in various cities and towns across India to assist farmers in spraying pesticides in their fields.

Background

In Budget 2022-23, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed significant boost for farming and agriculture. During the fiscal year 2022-23, the Centre would encourage Kisan Drones, public-private partnerships to bring digital and high-tech services, and chemical-free natural farming to farmers across India. She stated, emphasising the importance of technology, that kisan drones will be supported for digitalization of land data, crop evaluation, and spraying fertilisers and pesticides.

Drone Shakti Plan

This programme was introduced in the Union Budget 2022. The budget advocated for the promotion of drones through start-ups and talent development at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). Start-ups will be encouraged to participate in the initiative in order to support 'Drone Shakti' for Drone-As-A-Service (DrAAS). Skill-development courses will also be launched in a few chosen ITIs throughout the states as part of it. Drones can be used in agriculture, photography, telecommunications, mining, insurance, oil and gas, transportation, construction, disaster management, defence & law enforcement, geospatial mapping, forest and wildlife management, and other industries.
