Description

The white cheeked macaque was discovered lately in Arunachal Pradesh by biologists. The finding adds a new species to India's mammal registry. The White Cheeked Macaque was discovered in south-eastern Tibet for the first time.

Concerning the White Cheeked Macaque

These macaques are distinguished from other macaques by their white cheeks. They also have a longer tail and long, dense hairs on their necks. The Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 does not yet contain it. Hunting, habitat deterioration, infrastructural development, and local consumption pose the greatest danger to the species.

In India, there are other macaques

Aside from the white cheeked macaque, India is home to the Arunachal macaque, Assam macaque, and Rhesus macaque.

Habitat

It may be found in tropical forests, evergreen broadleaf forests, and mixed broadleaf conifer forests. It is often found at elevations ranging from 1395 to 2420 metres. They are divided into two groups, males and females. When they come across humans, the white-cheeked macaque lets out an alarm call, climbs trees, and escapes. Its warning cry is not as frequent as that of the Assam macaque.

India's total animal population

The discovery of the White Cheeked Macaque brings the overall mammal count to 438.

Macaques

Macaques are monkeys from the old world. There are 23 different types of macaques in the globe. They may be found mostly in Asia, North Africa, and Gibraltar. They mostly consume leaves, seeds, flowers, and tree bark. In Malaysia, pig-tailed macaques consume rats. There are also crab-eating macaques.

Human interactions

Macaques are mostly utilised in animal experimentation. They are mostly employed in neurology. Herpes B virus is carried by macaques. Macaques are unaffected by the virus. However, it is dangerous to people. Macaques have grown invasive in human communities on the island of Mauritius. Some other creatures have learnt to coexist peacefully with humans.
