Description

Concerning the Kanchoth Festival

The festival took place in the midst of severe snowfall and harsh cold wave conditions.

Locals, especially women, dressed up in traditional finery and fasted. They then flocked to temples to offer their prayers. They thought that the deity may aid in the abolition of the covid-19 epidemic.

Hindus, particularly Nag worshippers, commemorate this age-old holiday.

Nag devotees believe that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati wedded on Gouri tritiya. As a wedding present, Goddess Parvati requested a snow-covered throne. As a result, snowfall during the event is seen as a good omen.

Jatanai Village Functions

One of the festival's main festivities was held at the hilltop Jatanai hamlet in Chinchora Panchayat. Bhaderwah is 30 kilometres away. Bridal gowns were worn by ladies of various ages during the event. They flocked to the adjacent temple to celebrate the holiday, slogging through the snow.

Other people's celebrations

Celebrations were recorded from Kotli, Ghata, Mathola, Gupt Ganga, Khakhal, Kapra, Chinnote, Bheja, Bhalra, Chinchora, and other temples in the vicinity, in addition to Bhaderwah (India's Mini Kashmir). Married ladies celebrated the festival to pray for the long life of their spouse.

How long does this festival last?

The festival is held over three days, during this time, married ladies travel throughout the neighbourhood to show 'Thel' (respect) to everyone, regardless of religion, age, creed, caste, or gender. In exchange, they receive the blessing of 'Suhagan Bho' (wish your husband a long life).

The Festival's Importance

For married ladies, this is a holy day. They pray to Goddess Gauri for her husband's long and healthy life. Bridal outfits, bangles, bindis, sindur, and mehndi' are sanctimonious and are dedicated to the goddess. These are worn by ladies who are fasting.
