Description

A team of scientists recently identified a new gecko species in Kerala's Western Ghats. Hemidactylus easai is the scientific name for this species. The species was named after P S Easa, the former head of Kerala Forest and Research Institute.

Concerning the new species

The species was discovered in the forest's drier areas. It was 105 millimetres long from snout to vent. The colour of the species was light brown. It was discovered close to human settlement.

The distribution of geckos

There are around 180 different types of geckos in the globe. There are 48 in India, thirty of these 48 are in Kerala. Geckos do not pose a hazard to human settlements. They play an important function in pest control.

What exactly are geckos?

Geckos are types of lizards. Except for Antarctica, they can be found all around the planet. They are mostly found in the world's warm regions.

What distinguishes Gecko?

Geckos are a type of lizard that is unique among lizards. They are distinct in their vocalisation. For social interactions, they make chirping and clicking noises. When attacked or scared, they produce hissing sounds.

Origin of the Word

Gecko is a term from Indonesia, it is an imitation of the species' sound.

Features

The majority of geckos lack eyelids, As a result, they can't blink. They lick to get dirt out of their eyes. Geckos are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. In dim light, their vision is 350 times that of humans. Every two to four weeks, geckos lose their skin. The majority of geckos have sticky toe pads. They have several hundred teeth. They are polyphyodont, which means they replace their teeth every three month.

Ectothermic geckos

Ectothermic organisms have a lower internal heat. They use the heat from the atmosphere to power their metabolic processes. Geckos rely on ambient heat for eating, movement, breeding, and other essential tasks.
