On February 2, World Wetlands Day, the Aravalli Biodiversity Park was named the first Other Effective Area – based Conservation Measures (OECM) site.
What exactly is OECM?
The International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN, provides the OECM tag. The OECM sites, according to the IUCN, are not protected but are rich in biodiversity. The Aravalli Hills are the country's first OECM site. The National Biodiversity Authority proposed that Aravallis be designated as the OECM.
The Aravalli Biodiversity Park's Background
The park encompasses 390 acres, its vegetation is semi-arid. It has almost 43,000 bushes, 101,000 trees, and 300 indigenous plant species. Previously, the park was a mining facility. It was changed into a city forest thanks to the tireless work of environmentalists, biologists, and ecologists, as well as the local community. The Aravallis are known as Delhi's "green lungs." They help leopards, foxes, sambhars, and jackals. The Aravallis provide 7.07 percent of Delhi's oxygen.
The tag is required
Illegal mining has resulted in the loss of 25% of the Aravallis. There were almost 4,000 unlawful mining instances, according to CAG. Since the 1960s, 31 hills have gone from the landscape.
The Importance of Aravallis
The Aravallis Mountains serve as a barrier between the desert in the west and the rich region in the east. The Aravallis block the monsoon clouds, bringing rain to Nainital and Shimla. The hill serves as a recharge point for the region's groundwater.
Definition of OECM
The OECM areas were designated at the 2018 Convention on Biological Diversity. The following is the definition of OECM.
In layman's words
"The OECM isn't a protected area." It is regulated in order to obtain favourable results. The results are biodiversity protection, as well as a greater emphasis on cultural, socioeconomic, and spiritual values."
Technical Defined
The definition focuses on three major elements. There are three types of conservation, auxiliary conservation, secondary conservation, and main conservation. In ? situ conservation is provided through ancillary conservation. This comprises protected war cemeteries and freshwater protection zones. Active discourse is the secondary conservation. Creating conservation corridors, for example, is one example of secondary conservation. Primary conservation refers to lands that the government is unwilling to classify as protected areas. Indigenous people, religious groups, or private landowners will be the ruling powers.
