The first goods train arrived at Manipur's Rani Gaidinliu station on January 27, 2022. After 75 years, a freight train has finally arrived in Manipur. This demonstrates the state of Manipur's quick change.

Manipur Gets a New Railway Line

The state of Manipur is mountainous, as a result, railroad lines in this area were difficult to construct. In the state, a new 111-kilometer railway line has been erected, from Jiribam to Imphal, it is connected by this road, the Assam-Manipur border is 17 kilometres away from Jiribam railway station. Along the new train route, the railway department will build 46 tunnels.

There are 153 bridges in all. In this line is the world's highest bridge, it's located in the neighbourhood of Noney, the 141-meter-high bridge connects the two sides of the river. So far, the railway line has cost the Railways Rs 14,000 crores to build, In 2013, work on the project began. Up to Imphal, the line was to be built. There are already initiatives in the works to extend the programme.

Construction on the building began in 2013. The railway was supposed to be built all the way to Imphal. There are now proposals to expand the line all the way to Moreh. Moreh is a commercial post on the Myanmar-Manipur border.

Significance

The Government of India is attempting to expand commerce with Southeast Asian countries by developing rail connectivity to the North East. India intends to use the north-eastern states as a gateway to expand commerce with ASEAN nations.

In addition, the Government of India is improving connection to the region in order to diminish militancy in the area. When connection improves, commerce expands and the region's economic growth accelerates. This increases the number of job opportunities for young people. They become less vulnerable to terrorist organisations.

Trans-Asian Railway System

The Trans Asian railway is part of the proposal to expand the rail route to Moreh. The Trans Asian Railway is currently being built. The Trans Asian Railway is a project that intends to build a train link between Asia and Europe. It's a UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific initiative. The project's major goal is to provide a continuous rail link between Singapore and Istanbul, Turkey.
