On January 17, 2022, Pandit Birju Maharaj, a great Kathak master, died at the age of 83. Birju Maharaj is said to have had a heart attack in the early hours of Monday. Swaransh Mishra, his grandson, also shared the tragic news of his death on social media.
Apart from being a renowned Kathak dancer, Pandit Birju Maharaj was also a well-known classical vocalist who has donated his voice to a number of films. In 1986, the Government of India presented Birju Maharaj with the country's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, for his outstanding achievement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the Kathak maestro on Twitter, saying his death was an "irreparable loss" to the cultural world.
Biography of Birju Maharaj: Early Years, Career, and Background
1. Pandit Birju Maharaj, also known as Brij Mohan Nath Mishra, was born on February 4, 1938. He was born in the home of Kathak exponent Jagannath Maharaj, who had previously worked as a court dancer in the princely state of Raigarh.
2. Birju Maharaj was taught to play the violin by his uncles, and at the age of seven, he presented his first recital.
3. Birju Maharaj was a vocalist who also performed Hindustani Classical Music.
Career
1. Birju Maharaj was a Kathak dancer from the Lucknow Kalka- Bindadin Gharana in India. He was a Kathak dancer's descendent from the Maharaj family.
2. Birju Maharaj worked at Bharatiya Kala Kendra, subsequently known as Kathak Kendra, with his uncle Shambhu Maharaj, and was the head of the latter for numerous years. In 1998, Birju Maharaj resigned and founded his own dancing school, Kalashram.
3. Birju Maharaj began teaching at the Sangeet Bharti when he was 13 years old. Maharaj subsequently went on to teach at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra and the Kathak Kendra, where he was also the Director and Head of Faculty.
4. In Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari, Birju Maharaj wrote music and sung for two dance scenes. He also choreographed the song "Kaahe Chhed Mohe" from the 2002 adaptation of Devdas.
