On September 28, 2021, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, on the occasion of “World Rabies Day” released the “National Action Plan for Dog Mediated Rabies Elimination by 2030 (NAPRE).” On this occasion, the Ministers urged all the States and UTs to make Rabies a notifiable Disease.
The two ministers also launched the “Joint Inter-Ministerial Declaration Support Statement” for the elimination of dog-mediated rabies from India by 2030 through the One Health Approach. Due to the rapid increase in animal-induced diseases such as Covid-19, the government is now focusing on taking steps to reduce health risks caused by animals.
About National Action Plan for dog Mediated Rabies Elimination
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has drafted the action plan in consultation with the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. Its rabies elimination strategy is based on the recommendations of several international organizations, including WHO and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC). It was created with five major pillars in mind: political will, intersectoral planning, sustained funding, community planning, coordination & review, and operational research. NAPRE was established with the goal of reducing human deaths from dog-mediated rabies to zero by 2030. This goal will be met through ongoing mass dog vaccination campaigns and appropriate post-exposure treatment.
