The Academic Council (AC) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has approved a proposal to establish a 500-bed medical school and specialty hospital on campus. The School of Medicine will offer PhD, MD-PhD, MD, MS, DM, MCh and MBBS programs with a focus on modern medicine integrated with traditional medicine and knowledge systems from the humanities and social sciences. The plan to establish a School of Health Sciences and a Hospital calls for the recruitment of 259 teachers, and the total estimated budget for the project is Rs. Rs 900. The project will be completed in three years.

"The JNU Academic Council unanimously approved, in accordance with the provisions of the JNU Act 1966, the establishment of the School of Medical Sciences and its associated hospital with wide and super specialty departments, including auxiliary and non-traditional departments," said JNU Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar in a tweet. The school will offer courses for undergraduates, graduate students and researchers with a focus on modern medicine integrated with traditional medicine and knowledge systems from the humanities and social sciences.
Proposal approval
The Academic Council also approved a proposal for the inclusion of the NCC as an elective credit course with theoretical, practical and camp-based six semesters with 24 credits for NCC cadets. “Until now, the NCC has been an extracurricular activity, but now this curriculum will provide a comprehensive education and personal development for NCC cadets. The University Grants Commission (UGC) notices of the Academic Credit Bank (ABC) and the possibility of BTech exiting in four years in the School of Engineering's five-year dual degree program have also been approved by the Board.

According to the university, “this decision echoes the recommendations and spirit of the national education policy. Several other academic courses at various JNU schools have also been approved, including courses in Kannada and Odiya. " With regard to the implementation of the National Education Policy, the Council approved the recommendations of the committee set up to discuss this issue.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) wrote to Dharmendra Pradhan, Trade Union Minister of Education, delaying the appointment of a permanent vice-chancellor by more than seven months.
“JNU has not had a permanent vice-chancellor for more than seven months, although the replacement process began in October 2020. This excessive delay was used by the interim vice-chancellor, Professor Jagadesh Kumar, to push through substantive decisions that, under normal circumstances and in accordance with the Bylaws and the directives of the Government of India are not permissible by law for the person in his position,” the letter says.
