On August 10, 2021, the Islamic New Year 2021 will begin. Muharram, the second holiest month for Muslims after Ramadan, marks the start of the Islamic year. Muharram 2021 begins on August 10th, signaling the start of the new Muslim lunar calendar, 1443. The Islamic calendar has 354 or 355 days, which is about 11 days less than the Gregorian calendar.
Hijri New Year is another name for the Islamic New Year. The Islamic calendar year begins with Muharram and ends with Dhul al-Hijjah, the month in which devotees perform the sacred Hajj pilgrimage. The date of Muharram is determined by moon-sighting committees in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. According to religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, the new moon was not sighted on August 9. The date for Muharram is generally decided by the religious authorities in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and other regions in the Middle East.

Muharram 2021 Significance
The first month of the Islamic calendar is Muharram. Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran in total. The other three sacred months are Rajab (the seventh month), Dhul-Qadah (the eleventh month), and Dhul-Hijjah (the twelfth month).
Islamic New Year Significance
The Islamic New Year is based on the lunar system, whereas the Gregorian New Year is based on the solar system. Hijri months in Islam have either 29 or 30 days. According to Islamic Mythology, the Islamic New Year began in 622 AD with the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina. As a result, the Islamic Year 2021 will be known as Hijri 1443 AH. Many countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, declare a public holiday to mark the start of the Islamic year.
The first ten days of the holy month of Muharram are considered extremely important because Muslims commemorate the death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Husayn Ibn Ali al-Hussein, who died at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
