Bajrang Punia was defeated 12-5 by Azerbaijan's Haji Aliyev in the men's freestyle 65kg semifinals at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He is not yet out and will compete for the bronze medal. Bajrang Punia reached the semifinals of the men's freestyle 65kg event at the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Iran's Morteza Ghiasi Cheka in the quarterfinals.
The match began on a defensive note, with Bajrang Punia earning the first point of the match when Aliyev was penalized for passivity. However, the Azerbaijani quickly turned it around, taking two strong takedowns within a minute to lead 4-1 at the half. The second half began with Bajrang attempting to attack, but Aliyev brilliantly countered by taking the Indian down and then twisting him around to race to an 8-1 lead with more than 2 minutes remaining in the bout. The Indian responded with a takedown to cut the Russian's lead to 3-8 before being thrown off the mat.
Aliyev's next attack was unsuccessful, as Bajrang used it as a counterattack to score two more points, bringing the score to 5-9. The Azerbaijani never went on the defensive and defeated the Bajrang once more to lead 5-11. The match ended with a score of 5-12 due to an incorrect challenge by the Indian camp at this point. Now, he will be playing for bronze tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Ravi Kumar Dahiya became only the second Indian wrestler to win an Olympic silver medal on August 5, joining a select group of elite Indian athletes.
