Description

In order to attract tourists to the Union Territory's scenic beauty, Maldives-style water villas will be built in Lakshadweep soon. Praful Khoda Patel, the administrator of Lakshadweep, stated that water villas will be built at a cost of Rs 800 crore. This project is the first of its kind in India. The project will provide world-class facilities via a solar-powered and eco-friendly villa.

These villas would be built on the Lakshadweep islands of Minicoy, Suheli, and Kadmat. In order to construct water villas, the Lakshadweep administration has restructured and invited fresh global tenders to select bidders to develop beach and water villas. In total, 370 rooms will be available across the three islands. Villas would be built through a public-private partnership model. Water and beach villas will be given to selected bidders for 75 years to develop, operate, and maintain.

In 2019, the Lakshadweep administration issued a global tender to develop eco-tourism projects in these islands. However, due to a lackluster response from prospective bidders, the administration decided to withdraw tenders, restructure them, and re-float them. Niti Aayog and the Union Home Ministry are supporting these projects to develop these remote islands.

About the Union Territory

Lakshadweep is an archipelago of 36 islands in the Arabian Sea, located 200 to 440 kilometers off the southwestern coast of India. Lakshadweep means "one lakh islands" in Malayalam. On the islands, Malayalam is the official and widely spoken native language. With a total surface area of 32 km2, it is India's smallest union territory. It is a single Indian district region with ten subdivisions. The Kerala High Court has jurisdiction over Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep. It was originally made up of 36 islands. However, one of its islands, known as "Parali 1," has been submerged in water due to sea erosion.
