Today, July 27th, 2021 is the sixth death anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. Former President Abdul Kalaam collapsed and passed away of a heart attack while giving a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong on 27 July in the year 2015. He was 83 years old at the time.

Former President Bharat Ratna Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, to a Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.

APJ Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India, succeeding K. R. Narayanan from 25 July 2002 to 25 July 2007. He was appointed with the support of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress. Sir Abdul Kalam was widely referred to as the 'People's President' and was an Indian aerospace scientist.

He spent four decades as a scientist and science administrator at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) respectively and served as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation from July 1992 to December 1999.

He played a key role in India's Pokhran II nuclear test in the year 1998, the first since India's first nuclear test in 1974. Between the 1970s and 1990s, he also worked on the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and SLV-III projects, both of which proved successful among others.

He has authored several books including the famous Wings of Fire and Ignited Minds which inspires people to pursue dreams. He is also a recipient of several prestigious awards including India's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna in the year 1997 along with Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990).

Dr Kalam was the third President of India honoured with the Bharat Ratna before being appointed to the top post. The earlier two who received this prestigious award before becoming the President were Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and Dr Zakir Hussain.
