June 23, 2021 marks the United Nations Civil Service Day in recognition of the value and dignity of civil service to society. The day highlights the importance of civil service in the promotion phase. It is celebrated as the work of civil servants and encourages young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated annually on June 23. This day was designated by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly to “celebrate the value and dignity of public service to society”.
United Nations Public Service Awards
On this occasion, the United Nations Economic and Social Council established the United Nations Public Service Prize in 2003. This awards program was updated in 2016 in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This award is presented on Civil Service Day for contributions to enhancing the role, prestige and visibility of the civil service.
The history behind the Day
This day also marks the anniversary of the adoption by the International Labor Organization of the 1978 Labor Relations in the Public Service Convention (ILO Convention No. 151). This Convention defines the working conditions of all civil servants around the world. This day was celebrated in 2021 under the slogan
“Innovating the Future Public Service: New Government Models for a New Era to Reach Sustainable Development Goals”.
