The Israeli military has successfully tested a high-power air laser capable of shooting down drones. Israel already has a large and modern air defense system. This system had a 90 percent intercept rate for thousands of missiles fired from Gaza during the 11-day war in May 2021.

The laser is a prototype developed by Elbit Systems. It was installed on a civilian aircraft and successfully shot down drones in recent tests over the Mediterranean.

About laser weapons

Laser weapons are directed energy weapons based on lasers. As of January 2020, directed energy weapons, including lasers, are currently in the experimental stage, despite a number of research and development. It remains to be seen whether and when laser weapons will be deployed as a practical and high-performance military weapon. The laser generates a beam of light that requires clean air or vacuum to operate without thermal spread.

Problems with laser weapons

Atmospheric heat bloom is a serious problem. This problem can be exacerbated if there is fog, smoke, rain, dust, snow, smog, foam that looks like weird chemicals.
