The Boundary between Solar System and Interstellar Space Mapped
Date - 16th Jun 2021
Scientists have created the world's first three-dimensional map of the boundary between our solar system and interstellar space, called the Heliosphere. The 3D map was created using data from NASA's IBEX satellite. The boundary of the heliosphere is mapped for the first time. This will allow scientists to understand how the solar and interstellar winds interact.
This boundary was previously mentioned in theories of physical models. For the first time, scientists were able to measure it and make a three-dimensional map.
About the heliosphere
The heliosphere, created by the Sun, is a vast, bubble-like region of space that surrounds the Sun. It is a cavity formed by the Sun in the surrounding interstellar medium. The bubble of the heliosphere is continuously inflated by solar winds. Solar plasma provides a pathway for interstellar plasma beyond the heliosphere, which permeates the Milky Way galaxy. Radiation levels inside and outside the heliosphere differ. Galactic cosmic rays are less abundant. Thus, the planets inside are partially protected from their impact. The heliosphere is an area affected by the sun. Its edge is determined by the heliospheric magnetic field and the solar wind from the Sun.
The heliosphere was invented by Alexander J. Dessler. He used this word in his scientific literature, titled heliophysics, in 1967. Heliophysics includes space weather and space climate.
